It has been an exciting year at Carshalton College with student successes, awards and new developments. Below are some of the highlights as we look forward to welcoming new students in September.
Carshalton College celebrates being awarded GOOD by Ofsted
In May 2014 Carshalton College received a 'GOOD' Grading following their Ofsted (The Office for Standards in Education) Inspection.
This grading gives the teaching and support staff recognition for their enthusiasm, hard work and dedication that provides a ‘welcoming, stimulating and inclusive environment’ as concluded in the final report.
The report highlighted the quality of teaching and learning environment the College offers
“Students at all levels in the College achieve well.”
“The College has a culture of raising personal and career expectations through exceptional advice and guidance, and provides sustained support which contributes to the high levels of achievement.”
“Students enjoy studying at the College.”
“Teachers and assessors are well qualified, enthusiastic and motivating.”
“Support is very good and tailored effectively to meet each student’s needs.”
“The College’s excellent support and encouragement for students significantly contribute to the high success rates in the subject of hospitality and catering.”
New Construction, Engineering and construction (TEC) Centre
Carshalton College is undergoing a large construction project to consolidate the construction, engineering and motor vehicle curriculum areas into a single central location. The College was thrilled to host a Topping Out Ceremony on Friday 18 July along with Construction firms, Mitchellson and Longcross, to celebrate the next stage of their new Technology, Engineering and Construction (TEC) Centre.
The new build comes with the desire to bring the department areas together and to modernise the buildings using state of the art sustainable technologies. The new centre will improve the quality and environment of the delivery of the construction and motor vehicle curriculum.
Janet Smith Head of College stated “Our goal is to achieve a positive, inspiring and sustainable environment for our students to learn in, using high quality, industry standard technology. This will be a fantastic facility for students, staff and employers alike”.
The tradition of “Topping out” originates from Scandinavia. It is a toast to celebrate the completion of the steel frame and it is a custom for a person with a close connection or prominence with the building to place the final shovelful of concrete into the frame and that honour went to Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington. He has had a great vantage point from his constituency office across the road and has kept a keen eye on the build. He has a particular interest in the green technologies that have been used in the construction process and that will be taught in the new TEC Centre.
Tom Brake said, “This is yet another fantastic development for the College and their students, providing new workshops, classrooms and state of the art renewable technology – a real gem.”
The centre is expected to be completed in Winter 2014/15.

IT student, Reece Burton was awarded the prestigious Best Learner Award at the House of Lords in May 2014 .Liguang Chen, Reece’s IT Tutor, describes how Reece has developed during the course

Reecehas developed a good understanding of a wide range of IT subjects in general and software programming and web development in particular. He has a positive and enthusiastic attitude, and his academic skills have significantly improved – able to produce good quality research work independently.”
The Edge Enterprise Business Competition
The Edge competition saw 13 teams of students run their own businesses and summarised their business plans in a final presentation to a panel of employers on the 28 April 2014.
The teams were provided with a budget to help get their business off the ground and following the Awards Ceremony in London sponsored by NatWest on May 1st 2014, both Colleges will continue to encourage each team to develop and grow a successful business. This year the OverallTeam Winner is 'Cakes R Us’. Each team member will receive an iPad Mini. The Outstanding Individual award went to Elijah Mensah (Regenerate) who wins two air tickets to a European destination sponsored by British Airways.
