Principal Visits New Build

Carshalton College is undergoing a large construction project to consolidate the construction, engineering and motor vehicle curriculum areas into a single central location to be called the Technology, Engineering and Construction (TEC) Centre.

The new build comes with the desire to bring the department areas together and to modernise the buildings using state of the art sustainable technologies. The new centre will improve the quality and environment of the delivery of the construction and motor vehicle curriculum. The building will be a striking and informal building within which flexible 21st century teaching environments will inspire students and staff.

Peter Mayhew-Smith, Principal, spent the morning visiting the site and talking to the construction companies building the new centre, Mitchellson and Longcross.

'It's been very exciting to visit the site for our new technology centre. The building is huge and the project team are doing a great job in getting it up on time and in budget. Most of the structure is there now and some of the fittings will start to go in next. I can't wait to see it open this winter.'

The centre will be connected to the existing college’s main building and will be ideally situated for access, servicing and deliveries. The materials that are being used in the development have been selected for their sustainable characteristics and achieve a degree of architectural quality that is consistent with its setting whilst producing an inspiring design conceived so that the building can act as an advertisement for its function to both staff and students.

Carshalton College along with Construction firms, Mitchellson and Longcross, will be celebrating the next stage of their new build with a Topping Out Ceremony. Taking place on Friday 18 July at 11.00am, Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington will officially pour the last of the concrete into the structural frame of the new Engineering and Construction Centre. This traditional Topping Out Ceremony will be followed by a Champagne Reception.

Topping Out Ceremony

Carshalton College is undergoing a large construction project to consolidate its construction, engineering and motor vehicle curriculum areas into a single central location. The College was thrilled to host a Topping Out Ceremony along with Construction firms, Mitchellson and Longcross, to celebrate the next stage of their new Technology, Engineering and Construction (TEC) Centre.

The new build comes with the desire to bring the department areas together and to modernise the buildings using state of the art sustainable technologies. The new centre will improve the quality and environment of the delivery of the construction and motor vehicle curriculum.

Janet Smith Head of College stated “Our goal is to achieve a positive, inspiring and sustainable environment for our students to learn in, using high quality, industry standard technology. This will be a fantastic facility for students, staff and employers alike”.

The tradition of “Topping out” originates from Scandinavia. It is a toast to celebrate the completion of the steel frame and it is a custom for a person with a close connection or prominence with the building to place the final shovelful of concrete into the frame and that honour went to Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington. He has had a great vantage point from his constituency office across the road and has kept a keen eye on the build. He has a particular interest in the green technologies that have been used in the construction process and that will be taught in the new TEC Centre.

Tom Brake said, “This is yet another fantastic development for the College and their students, providing new workshops, classrooms and state of the art renewable technology – a real gem.”

Students were very much at the heart of the mornings celebrations, Tom Brake MP was keen to hear about how Carshalton College’s Apprentices were getting on and what they thought of the new building. Daniel Crook from the local firm KNK said that he found “being an Apprentice very rewarding and was happy that he was able to earn a wage whilst learning a trade. I feel very supported by the College and my employer and I am looking forward to my future as a skilled tradesman.” Philip Soloman of KNK stated that “I am proud to be part of a company that has a long history of investing in its local community” and commented that “it is wonderful to have such a state of the art centre for our Apprentices, the new Centre will provide great opportunities for so many learners the College has laid foundations for a prosperous future for the area for many years to come.”

Catering students at the College treated the guests to an amazing celebratory cake in the image of what the new Centre will look like on completion. The delicious work of art took three and a half days to construct and just 30 minutes to eat.

This varied and interesting course took place in the College’s in house training restaurant Nightingales on Saturday mornings and was taught was industry expert and tutor, Ian Elson. • simple nutrition
  • basic kitchen hygiene and safety

Ashleigh Palmer, 15, from Caterham completed the course and said

“This short course gave me the opportunity to try new interests and learn new things. My experience at Carshalton College was amazing! The course was good because it was broken up into manageable chunks, where I learnt useful skills for later in life. The course ended with having to cook a meal for family and friends which although it was tough and tiring, I feel I achieved something great. Head of College takes on the Ice Bucket Challenge

Carshalton College’s Head of College, Janet Smith, took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Thursday 28 August at 11.00am. Carshalton College will be donating £100 for pouring a bucket of water over Janet and Janet challenged all Carshalton College Students and Staff to join in the Group Bucket Challenge during induction at the start of the new term.

Visit the Carshalton College Facebook page to see Janet's challenge

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is to raise awareness and money for motor neurone disease. It has become a massive wide world viral campaign where people are challenged to throw a bucket of ice water over their heads before nominating three other people to take on the challenge within the following 24 hours.

Following in the frozen footsteps of David Beckham, Justin Timberlake and Steven Gerrard, Janet is pleased to be able to take part in the challenge to help raise money and increase awareness to get as many staff and students involved too.

ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which is the most common type of motor neurone disease. In the UK it is termed as MND and in the USA they use ALS. MND is a rapidly progressive and fatal disease, which can affect any adult at any time and attacks the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves.

The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no known cure. Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time, with half of people with the disease dying within 14 months of diagnosis. It kills five people every day in the UK.

The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association is the only national organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland dedicated to the support of people with MND and those who care for them. The Association funds research to understand what causes MND, how to diagnose it and, most importantly, how to effectively treat it so that it no longer devastates lives.

Denise Davies, Head of Community Fundraising at the MND Association, said: “Without the amazing support of people like Janet Smith and the staff and students at Carshalton College, the MND Association simply would not be able to provide it’s vital support services and fund research to find a cure. Together we are making a real difference for people affected by this devastating disease.”

Janet challenged all Carshalton College Students and Staff to join in the Group Bucket Challenge on Monday 15th September at 4.30pm outside the College. The college will donate a £1 for each student/staff member who takes up the challenge.

Luke Hall - Foundation Degree Student

I chose to study at Carshalton College as studying in the evening fitted in with my job and the course content was more relevant to me than the HNC alternative. The facilities and teaching are both excellent and my tutor has outstanding knowledge of all electrical systems. There hasn’t been a single question that he hasn’t been able to answer in full. As a result of that I have learnt a great deal. The course is challenging and you do have to manage your time to get the work done.

The design project element of the course was a real learning curve and great practice for me as my end goal is to become a design consultant. As a direct result of attending the course I have been offered a job as a Junior Engineer and I am about to embark on my first international project.

Ten Level 3 Hairdressing students will be styling winners of a competition as they indulge in a pamerping day. Wear It For Autism’ is pampering Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers who either have autism themselves or care for those living with the condition in a super-stylish fashion event at  London’s Millenium Hotel, Knightsbridge, London on Monday 6 October.

Carshalton College’s hairdressing tutor Fiona Chaffey was asked to be involved in the event and will be taking along students to style the hair of all the winners.

Anna Kennedy OBE organizes the event and is thrilled to run the pampering event again after the success of the 2013 event. She says
“The idea behind Wear It For Autism was to spoil those who usually never get a chance to treat – or even think – of themselves. Living with autism can be challenging and extremely demanding so we wanted to create a special event, that would be fun for all involved ‘ Tickets for the show will be available soon and all ticket holders will receive FREE goody bags!

This year the event is supported by Models of Diversity and Pineapple Performing Arts.

Fiona has fantastic links to provide students with the opportunities to take part in external events and gain added experience for their CVs. Fiona said

“It will be give the students an insight into a different world and open up an alternative avenue into the hair industry in addition to working in a salon. There are endless opportunities and one is working back stage at events like this and being a sessional stylist.”

Carshalton College has a great reputation for their Hairdressing courses. The courses have been running for over 50 years since the College opened, making it one of the few original vocational courses on offer. There is a front of house Renaissance salon that is open to the public, which is a realistic working environment and a training salon where learning takes place in a creative atmosphere. The staffs are all dedicated practitioners who continue to work in industry alongside their teaching role, keeping updated of new trends, innovative ideas and practices.
