The Committee of South London Principals (COSLP) held its annual Best Learner Awards at the House of Lords. Carshalton College is delighted to announce Alannah Williams was nominated for a Best Learner Award 2015. Alannah proudly received her award from Lord Tope at the House of Lords in May.

Alannah joined the Carshalton College in 2012 and spent two years gaining her Childcare qualification and re-taking her Maths and English GCSEs. After deciding to pursue a career working with young people, Alannah realised it would be beneficial to learn a trade and selected Bricklaying.

Alannah, who manages multiple mental health issues including ADHD and Bipolar Disorder, works hard to overcome these challenges and is motivated to gain her qualifications and succeed. Alannah receives regular support by the College’s Student Support Team.

Alannah Williams is currently on the CSkills Diploma in Brickwork Level 1, flying the flag for women in construction. She works hard towards achieving her goal of becoming a youth worker to help other young people who maybe struggling with similar issues.

Alannah is the only female in the class of 15 students and will be the first female to complete the Level 1 Diploma at the College. Her tutor Sean Henry is extremely proud of Alannah’s attitude and enthusiasm since joining the course.
In her own words: “At first, being the only girl on the Bricklaying course was overwhelming, but the boys have been helpful and I am treated no differently. It’s a hands on course and Sean has been a fantastic tutor. Carshalton College has given me the confidence to achieve; finding ways to help me learn that suits me. You are treated like an adult.”

Matthew Proctor, Construction Team Leader, said
“It is great to have a woman on the bricklaying course; we hope Alannah will inspire other young women to consider learning a trade within Construction. The industry is growing and companies are welcoming the increasing number of women in different trades.”

Fun-filled Festival of Sport

On Wednesday 3 June 300 students filled the David Weir Leisure Centre for a “Festival of Sport”.

This multi-college event offered students with learning and physical disabilities from Carshalton CollegeKingston College, Orchard Hill and Carew Academy the opportunity to engage in an exciting day of sport and cultural activities.

The Leisure Centre was filled with sunshine, colour and laughter as the students formed a procession around the track with flags waving and team mascots marching to an upbeat soundtrack provided by Radio Jackie.

The students were then given the freedom to explore different sports and activities. The drumming proved popular with the students and the Mayors too. The Gary Mason Charity, whose moto “It’s all about the heartbeat” provided the drums and certainly engaged everyone.

Steve Brown the Captain of the England Wheelchair Rugby Team joined in with the sports encouraging the students paid tribute to the event saying; “This is more than just a day out for the students, this raises their self-esteem whilst they’re having a lot of fun”

The Mayor of Sutton paid testament to the organisation of such a big event praising staff, students and volunteers for their great effort.

Peter Mayhew-Smith, Principal for Carshalton and Kingston Colleges said; “We are lucky enough to have the Mayors of Sutton and Kingston supporting us today. It has been wonderful for our students to take part in such a wide variety of activities.  I am sure the memory of today will stay with our students, staff and guests for a long time. I must thank all those who volunteered their time today from EcoLocal Cycling Sutton Tennis Academy, Surrey Football Association (FA)Carshalton Football Club to the drummers from the amazing Gary Mason Charity.”

Carshalton College and the Green Skills Partnership (GSP)  have recently won a bid for just under £300,000 to support the re-engagement of unemployed construction workers, aged 19 and over. The bid is funding a programme that aims to drive growth within the Construction industry by supporting company's re-introduction of local and suitably qualified labour and support staff - with a background in construction - back into the workforce.

The bid is part of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) project for construction – a key project within the Greater London Joint Initiative Programme, funded by the CITB and London Enterprise Panel.

The programme offers work placements with contractors for a minimum of two weeks which will help workers to secure future employment. To take part in the programme the only requirement is that the individual is unemployed and has previously worked in the construction industry. Recent placements include Michelle Umagho-Ukueko, who was placed at a major Willmott Dixon Construction project based in Epsom. Michelle previously worked as a Health & Safety Advisor and the placement offered her the opportunity to update her skills in this area.

To find out more about how to take part in this programme as an employer or individual, please email Brian.Stiling@ksep.ac.uk.

South London would-be mechanical and civil engineers are in for a treat, as Carshalton College has just appointed a vivacious Team Leader for their Access to Higher Education,  Engineering.

Columbian-born Maivtxy Cadavid who joins Carshalton College, is looking forward to helping more budding engineers win a University place.

“If students have the ability and the desire, it is possible to go to University to study engineering. It’s a great career choice which opens lots of doors in a competitive job market.”

Maivtxy, is keen to attract more girls onto her courses and says that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is an excellent way to promote these subjects to girls in schools and colleges.

“Engineering, is just like IT, business or media – it’s everywhere we look. I like to give real life examples of engineering in everyday life and especially like doing out of the classroom teaching as it consolidates learning.”

With a degree in aeronautical engineering from Queen Mary’s University and an MSc from Kingston University, Maivtxy has an excellent track record - based on personal knowledge and experience - of helping her students get into some of London’s top Universities to study engineering.
