Creative Opportunities at Carshalton College

0
0

Mark Gatehouse, Team Leader for Creative Technologies, has been a tutor at Carshalton College for 5 years. Joining as an Interactive Media Tutor in the Creative Industries department, Mark has now taken on a new role in the IT team. With a varied and interesting career, wealth of expertise and knowledge across a number of creative areas, Mark provides a fantastic enthusiasm with his teaching and plenty of opportunities to learn.

Leaving school at 18, Mark joined Sainsbury’s before realising he wanted to follow his passion for photography and completed the BA (Hons) Film and Photographic Arts course at the University of Westminster. Following his teacher training, Mark has worked at various schools, colleges and universities teaching photography, video production, games design and interactive media.

His career outside teaching has included working with professionals across the media sector including famous directors. Mark was an authorised photographer for IBM, shot images for Calvin Klein and SEAT, illustrated computer books, worked as an IT Director for an advertising agency and his studio was one of the first in the country to turn a profit from digital imaging. He has exhibited widely in London and won an RX Club award in New York for a medical advertising series.

Talking about his love for teaching, Mark said

“It is the continuously varied enthusiasm of students that makes the job interesting. Carshalton College is the perfect size to encourage students to develop interests across a wide spectrum of creative areas without being pigeon holed. I love learning, experimenting and having the chance to do this everyday makes me happy.

With the convergence of the creative and IT subjects in our department, we are now ideally situated to deliver a truly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) curriculum that fully engages with industry.”

The department  works hard to maintain strong links with Media and Games Development networks, enabling our students to gain access to industry specialists and take part in activities with real life briefs and exhibitions. These include the Worldskills Games Development Competition, where Games students, Sean Covell & Laura Nelson, rose to the challenge at the London regional heat and Sean secured his place as one of the final ten competitors (taking place in November in Birmingham) and Laura made it through to the reserve list.

There have been placements with Film Production companies, 36 students took part in a project to set up a working media company, work has been submitted to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, students presented responses to live briefs with Lloyds Bank and BT, submitted work to the Holocaust Exhibition with London Borough of Sutton Council and coming up before Christmas the students will be running a stall in Sutton High Street.

His advice to students interested in creative subjects would be

“Be open to new ideas, learn everything and not just the software, think outside the box, look for similarities and not differences and kick the doors open!”

Talking about the College, Mark said

“One of the great things about working at Carshalton College is that we work successfully as a team to get the very best out of our learners and to position the College at the heart of our community. This year we have a new HNC to offer local people the opportunity to access Higher Education and careers in Music. We are opening up our facilities on Saturdays to run a Coder Dojo for parents and young people to use our facilities for their own creative projects. In the spring we are holding a massive Creative Technology careers fair with some really great companies and Universities taking part. We are also working with our major sponsor Autodesk to become the first accredited Academic Autodesk Training Centre for Media and Entertainment!

Better find your sunglasses as the future looks bright”

On Friday 6 September, a total of 16 past and present Carshalton College hairdressing students will be working on the “CATWALK4CHANGE” Couture fashion show.

The founder of Models of Diversity, Angel Sinclair is redefining fashion in the form of the Catwalk4Change fashion show. The event will consist of two shows. The first display expresses the need for a mature outlook within the high fashion industry. Taking inspiration from the style and grace of the 50s this exhibition will transcend close minded notions of age.

The second show, collaboration with Pret-a-Reporter Blogger Edita Lozovska, aims to highlight the lack of racial diversity on the runway. This inspirational display will bring together bloggers and designers of varied cultural, social and religious backgrounds.

Hairdressing Students from Carshalton College will be working backstage, assisting published hair stylists, celebrity stylists, front of house and in the VIP area.

Fiona Chaffey, Hairdressing tutor at Carshalton College will head the Hair and Make-up at the show and said “This will be a real eye opener for the students into the world of fashion shows. They will be able to see the work that goes into a high end event like this. It will also help on building customer service skills, which is so important within the hairdressing industry.”

There will be an audience of 250 people including celebrities such as Caroline Rush (British Fashion Council), Cast from The Only Way is Essex, Denise Welch, Jane Goldman and Charlotte Avery will present the show.

The show will be raising funds for the charities Mind and Macmillian.

If you fancy delving into the world of music technology and having a go at making a beat or track, fancy giving DJ or live performance a shot, or want to gain experience in our fully featured facilities then our Music Technology Evening course could be for you.

Commencing Wednesday 2 October 2013, the 10 week course costs only £110.

All music technology students at Carshalton College now work on brand new Apple iMac computers with both Cubase and Logic Pro installed as standard. Both studio PCs have state of the art Apple Mac PRO computers with Intel Xeon processors. We also have a large range of professional microphones for recording vocals and instruments courtesy of SE Electronics.

The music technology team also have several avenues open to the DJ performance side of things with Pioneer CDJs turntables, Ableton Live with Akai APC40 controller and Native Instruments Traktor PRO with S4 controller. Our studio 2 has been redesigned and treated with acoustic tiling to get things sounding really tight. And of course we still have Studio 1 with our fantastic live room and 24track recording facility.

Not only do you get to learn on the most up to date equipment and software but you also have the expertise of one of our music technology tutors Nat Ryles. Nat is a music tech guru, starting his life as a dance music producer and DJ way back in the late 1980s. He has plenty of industry experience as a record label manager, promoter, live and recording engineer and has travelled the world performing at some of the largest underground dance music festivals on the planet. The key to Nat's value here at the College is that he is still very much active within the industry writing, recording and performing.

The Carshalton College Music Technology Evening Course is a friendly and laid back workshop where the students are free from the bother of assessments and written work. Everyone is encouraged to communicate their needs and desires with the tutor so that their time can be used as productively as possible during the sessions. The equipment is there to learn on and gain experience of, and the tutor is there for help and guidance. All levels of skill are welcome, from absolute beginners looking to have a go, to the semi-professional looking to brush up on advanced techniques.

Catering Apprenticeships The Perfect Recipe for Success

0
0

Nadean Moses (36) studied at Carshalton College for two years as a Catering Apprentice. She is now working full time for The Wisley golf club in Ripley and has ambitious plans for the future in pursuing her passion for cooking.

After attending Art College and working in various jobs, Nadean decided it was time to follow her dreams and focus on a catering career. Inspired by her mum’s cooking, experimenting at home and watching chefs like Gordon Ramsey, Nadean got a job as a chef at The Wisley golf club. The Head Chef, Sam Peschier, recommended Carshalton College as the ideal place to study an Apprenticeship. This course suited Nadean’s situation enabling her to learn a new career, developing skills while earning money to support her paying bills.

The NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Professional Cookery Apprenticeship provided two different experiences of learning in College and in a workplace which complimented each other. Nadean found she was taking to work knowledge she was learning at Carshalton and embracing the chance to experience the Head Chef role with preparing dinners at the College’s in house restaurant Nightingales. Nadean also found the written work at College helped develop her English skills in writing menus and the descriptive break down of preparing dishes.

The Wisley caters for lunches, dinners and functions and can be a 9 to 11 hour day on the go from preparation to delivering the orders as fast as possible. Nadean enjoys the big functions such as weddings with set menus and a conveyor belt of food being prepared and sent out.

The long days can be tiring and involve heated conversations between the team to get everything done but Nadean says the satisfaction of being complimented for the food and praised for a dish makes it all worthwhile and is the drive to get  into the kitchen.

For anyone interested in a catering career, Nadean feels an Apprenticeship is a good start

“You learn so much at both College and in the workplace. I have catered for a friend’s birthday party since starting work and found I had the confidence to do this from what I had learnt. You think outside the box and learn additional knowledge like spending less on food shopping and wasting less of the food you buy. It is long hours but working in a kitchen is like working in a family. College really helped develop my knowledge and provides the chance to ask questions. I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to learn as much or enjoy this work so much.”

Tom Hall, Curriculum Manager for the catering and hospitality courses at Carshalton College, led Nadean’s course. Nadean took advantage of learning from Tom’s experience as Head Chef and

Senior Sous-Chef at top London restaurants including ‘The Bleeding Heart’ and ‘The Ivy’ and the different style of teaching compared to the Head Chef at The Wisley.

Tom said

“Nadean progressed from Level 2 to Level 3 NVQ Apprenticeship and applied herself at College and in the workplace gaining the relevant experience to move forward. A team player within the group, she was always willing to take on new challengesand proved herself in the workplace.”

Assessor Sandra Marshall added

“As Nadean’s Level 2 assessor I always found going to see Nadean at The Wisley a pleasure. She always did he best in work based assessments and had good support from Head Chef Sam Peschier.”

Nadean’s future plans including progression in the catering industry, writing her own cookbook and is interested in working in TV on cookery programmes.

Plumbing and Heating Apprentice Hanna Castelino

Carshalton College has been working with Duel Services since September 2013 offering Apprenticeships to Plumbing apprentices. A success story form this partnership is apprentice Hanna Castelino. After gaining her A-Levels, and  working at a Theatre she first approached Duel Services regarding an Apprenticeship.

‘Initially, I received training from an independent centre, however, once completing the course I was left without any real guidance or work experience.’ Hanna explained.

‘Having contacted Duel Services, it was obvious they could provide me with a clear route to utilise my existing skillset as well as contributing to the necessary training I would need to further my progress of becoming a fully fledged engineer.’

Part-time Education

Hanna is currently attending Carshalton College one day a week, undertaking a Level 2 and NVQ course in Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeship.

Her role with Duel Services has progressed extremely quickly and she is now compiling quotes within the office, as well as training with other engineers on site.

When I began my Apprenticeship with Duel Services in February 2013, my job role was planned so that until the start of the college term I would be working in the office gaining a complete understanding of the operation of the company. During this time I have worked closely with the Technical Manager, gaining an advanced understanding of various aspects of plumbing and heating before the start of the course.’

Bright Future

The Apprenticeship course Hanna is taking provides plenty of options for career progression.

Once gaining her Level 2 she can progress onto her Level 3 Plumbing and Heating NVQ, Hanna would then have a number of career opportunities, one of which would be to become a Gas Safe registered engineer.

‘I chose this specific Apprenticeship course as ideally I wanted to become a Heating Engineer.’

‘The training received from Duel Services enables me to work with other plumbers and gas engineers, which in turn has propelled me towards my goal of becoming a fully qualified Plumbing and Heating Engineer.’ said Hanna.

The Employment & Enterprise Zone and Carshalton College and Kingston College are pleased to have celebrated Global Enterprise Week during the 18th and 24th November.

Global Enterprise Week is the world’s largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship. Each year, it plays a critical role in encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs to consider starting up their own business.

Activities to celebrate this global event included a presentation delivered to the Travel and Tourism team in partnership with Kingston Entrepreneurs. Kingston Entrepreneurs is a student led enterprise society at Kingston University; the president spoke about how to develop an enterprise society at Kingston College and the benefits of engaging with industry leaders at summits, boot camps, career launch pads etc.

“Enterprise societies are not just for those who want to start a business, they're for those who want to learn new skills, meet new people, try new things and give themselves competitive advantage in the working world. As a student myself, I’m keen to show the benefit of entrepreneur societies and enterprising activities that allow students to take part in something that will help them fulfil their ambitions and reach their potential.”

Gabriella Bergin-Cartwright, President of Kingston Entrepreneurs.

The Colleges have also launched the Edge Enterprise competition which aims to celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship and learning in the 21st century economy. This involves a passport being issued which provides students with eight entitlements to choose from in supporting their enterprise developments and equipping them with the skills required in the world of work.

Throughout the year students will receive mentoring, advice and guidance from industry experts to support their progress culminating in a presentation of their chosen business ideas to a panel of high calibre employers such as Sainsbury’s, London Borough of Sutton, Merlin Entertainment, British Airways, Ignite Strategies and Sutton Housing Partnership.
