Carshalton College students from the Creative Industries department have contributed to the creation of The Volunteering In Focus Photo Book produced by The Volunteer Centre, Sutton.

The Volunteering In Focus Photo Book showcases the incredible work that volunteers do in the London Borough of Sutton. The photo book highlights a fantastic year that has included significant national events and local festivals. With a mixture of locality snaps, people, teams and arty creations it is a bright and authentic picture of Sutton’s residents, community, and culture.

The book is currently being showcased at the Europa Gallery at Sutton Library and will be throughout December as part of the wider Summer Festival Exhibition.

Sabina Uzunovic, Melissa Hall & Marvin Kakooza  all Interactive Media students and tutor Christine Brown all assisted in the production of the book. The students edited and cropped photos while learning new techniques for page layout.

Art students, Andrew Ellis, Sergey Galevskis & Beneriza Javate and tutor Miriana Dambrosio all provided artwork and photography that has been used in the book.

“It was great to have the Carshalton College media students and instructors give their skills and their time to create a book focused on community and volunteering! We are looking forward to having the students do many more volunteer projects with local community organisations”– Romanda Simpson, BeConnected

The Volunteer Centre Sutton is the largest in the country, delivering a broad portfolio of services to enhance community well-being through voluntary action, encouraging and supporting everybody who lives in or visits the London Borough of Sutton to volunteer with a positive outcome.

Catering students succeed at the regional heats in the 2012/13 Brakes Student Chef Team Challenge

Three Carshalton College Hospitality & Catering students made it through the first stages of the 2012/13 Brakes Student Chef Team Challenge (SCTC) to the regional heats. The London regional heat took place on Saturday 26 January 2013 and the three students rose to the challenge and produced three exquisite courses for the judges resulting in the team being awarded second place.

Sam Hutchinson, Jake Solman-Wood and Mathew Clayton prepared a menu in the theme ‘Going Global with World Cuisine’. The first course was a red wine poached quince and goat’s cheese filo tart, followed by a pan seared breast of duck, with seasonal greens, pancetta, and a celeriac and parsnip puree, redcurrant jus. The meal was finished with deep fried pasta with a mango and passion fruit mousse.

Tom Hall, Catering Team Leader said “The competition was to an incredibly high standard and the students put in a remarkable amount of effort to perfect these three dishes. On the day they stayed calm and performed under the pressure to deliver three impressive dishes. I am very proud of their work.”

The Brakes Student Chef Team Challenge is a leading student chef competition which has been running annually since 1993. The UK competition is for teams of three full time college students studying hospitality or catering. Teams firstly submit their entry with details of a three course meal for four people including how they will prepare each course, the cost, working to a budget of £10 per cover and the ingredients that will be used. These entries are then judged by a panel and a shortlist of teams are chosen to compete in the next stage of the competition, a Regional Heat. There are six Regional Heats with a winner from each region. All winning teams and the overall best runner up then take part in the live final competition.

The competition is run by Brakes, a leading supplier to the foodservice industry in the UK, Ireland, France and Sweden. The Craft Guild of Chefs are the official competition partners and provide support and expertise in the judging process for the heats and final.

Carshalton College offers students a variety of Hospitality & Catering courses including Certificates, Diplomas and City and Guilds qualifications in an Introduction to Hospitality, Food and Drink Service and Professional Cookery.

Nightingales is Carshalton College's on-site training restaurant. Meals are prepared and served by our enthusiastic students under the supervision of experienced chefs. The restaurant is open to the public during term time for coffee mornings, lunch, dinner, functions and business events plus our special themed evenings.

Sainsburys employees talk to Carshalton College students

On Thursday 24 January 2013 staff from retail giant Sainsbury’s came to Carshalton College to speak to our students about the opportunities within Sainsbury’s.

The six Sainsbury’s employees spoke to two large groups of students on the prospects available in Sainsbury’s. The talk started with a quiz to highlight some key facts and figures about the retailer. Students were made aware of many facts including that there are over 1,000 Sainsbury’s stores, 19 of which are in the local area to the College.

The team then went on to show a selection of subjects studied by current employees and the departments these people are now working in. This ranged from store management roles to head office roles including HR, finance, sales and marketing and many more. This displayed the variety of roles available at Sainsbury’s and the many diverse routes of entry taken by employees.

A selection of case study examples were given to the students, including one person who joined the firm at the age of 19 and progressed upwards to become a store manager by the age of 26. The use of real case studies showed the students how career progression takes place and how it is possible to develop and get promoted into a management role. Rachel Fairfield, 21, employee from Sainsbury’s who attended the talks said ‘…”After only 4 months I have been given the opportunity to progress my career and broaden my experiences in Sainsbury’s.”

Rebecca Reid, Recruitment Consultant from Carshalton College organised the talk and said, ‘It is really exciting to be developing this relationship with such a large employer and be able to inform our students of great opportunities.’

Students from the first year Art & Design course at Carshalton College have created pieces that will be displayed at the upcoming Open House & Front Room Grand Opening at Volunteer Centre Sutton on Wednesday 6 March 2013. The posters and invitations promoting the event were designed with assistance from a Carshalton College media student. The event is to celebrate the opening of the Front Room which has been ‘re-imagined’ as a welcoming space for volunteers to go to the Centre and discover the world of volunteering.

The doors are open from 6:30pm – 8:30pm and attendees will include the general public as well as appearances by key individuals including the Deputy Mayor Joyce Melican.  A welcome speech and ribbon cutting will happen at 7:00pm and there will be live music from a local artist and light refreshments.

The Front Room will host monthly Open Houses, see volunteering information sessions, and community groups and organisations will have the opportunity to book the space for their needs.  This open space will feed off the excitement in the community inspired by the Olympics and welcome a new era for volunteering!

Students and their friends and family are encouraged to stop by the Volunteer Centre, (31 West Street, Sutton, SM1 1SJ) to help celebrate and view the artwork contributed by the students.

Attendees are welcome to show up on the day or can RSVP at http://vcsgrandopening.eventbrite.com

Childcare Fashion Show and Art Exhibition on Childrens Rights

0
0

On Thursday 28 February 2013 the Childcare department held a fashion show and art exhibition to showcase their learning on children’s rights. The event took place in Nightingales restaurant with the College Principal, Peter Mayhew-Smith present amongst a number of friends and family.

As part of the Childcare course students have been working on gaining an in-depth understanding of children’s rights. The students have worked in small groups to research an article from the rights and have taken this information and designed this onto a t-shirt. These t-shirt designs were displayed in the fashion show.

The students have also gone into their work placements and have set up activities to raise children’s awareness of their rights. This resulted in children making artwork displaying what their rights mean to them and this is the artwork that was on display at the exhibition.

Following the catwalk display of t-shirts the students were questioned by their tutor on what right they learnt about and how they approached this with the children they work with in their placement.

The Carshalton College hairdressing students were also involved in the show doing the hair for those students participating in the fashion show. The media students and skills for work & life students also assisted with the show.

Carshalton College Childcare tutor, Xiao-Huang Li organised the fashion show and exhibition and said “The students have really gained a thorough understanding of children’s rights and the importance & seriousness of the subject. It has been great for them to display what they have learnt in a different way through the fashion show and art exhibition. We are all so pleased with our students and the effort they have put in with the subject and with the show. This is the first time we have organised this event and it has proven very successful and has aided the students in their learning.”
